21 July 2008 - Statement on the Government's response to the proposals for Regional Select Committees
Paul Jagger, Chair of the Assembly’s Scrutiny Board, welcomed the Government’s Response to the Modernisation Select Committee’s report on Regional Accountability, describing it as “a further step in the right direction.’’
He added: “The response confirms the proposals to build on the existing structures and work the Assembly has helped establish and lead and so it must be welcomed.
“Overall, we must continue to ensure the accountability of public bodies is robust and secure and the involvement of our MPs in specific regional select committees can only be good news.
“But as these proposals move forward, we must also make sure the lessons of current regional scrutiny aren’t lost, and that the work complements, rather than conflicts, with other future regionally scrutiny arrangements led by our local authorities and supported by other stakeholders.’’
